Keeping Yourself Motivated To Continue Your Weight Loss
The hardest part of losing weight for most people turns out to not be the physical part of dropping those excess pounds, but instead it is the mental aspect of the process. It becomes more difficult to keep yourself motivated to stay with your chosen weight loss program as time goes by. You become less and less confident that the sacrifices that you are making in order to lose the weight will be worth the results that you see in the long run. So how do you keep yourself motivated to stick with your weight loss program? There are four main motivators that you can use to inspire yourself.
The first of these is visualization. Take the time to sit down, close your eyes, and picture in your mind the lifestyle that you will be leading when your weight loss journey is complete. Don’t stop with just the simple stuff like how your new body will look. Make it as complete as possible. What kinds of activities will you be involved in? Who will you be doing them with? How will you feel? The more specific that you can make your visualizations the better results that you will see from them. And make sure to write it down in detail afterward to reinforce to yourself.
The second is to set specific goals for yourself. This doesn’t mean be general about it like saying “I want to lose 20 pounds.” You need to set specific goals for what you want to accomplish not only long term but for this week and this month, even this particular day if it helps you. Don’t just decide how many pounds you want to lose but get right down into how you are going to do it. What is your exercise plan for today? For this week? Are you going to try out some new recipes? Which ones? Write out that shopping list down to the last detail, and when you get to the store do not deviate from it. Write everything down in detail. Writing things down helps to instill them into our brains better.
The third is to set yourself an appointment for exercise. However often you decide to exercise you need to make it a habit and always keep your appointment with yourself. Set up penalties for yourself for missing the appointment if you need to in order to ensure you don’t miss it. Studies have shown that people need to perform a new task for at least 21 days in order to ingrain it as a new habit. Permanent weight loss requires that exercise becomes a habit.
And finally you need to establish a support system for yourself. As much as we want to we cannot always realistically hold ourselves accountable. It is easy to let things slide a little when there is no one keeping an eye on us. Consider finding yourself a friend to go on the weight loss journey with you, or at least can be your exercise buddy to hold you accountable for your workouts. Give a family member a copy of the goals that you set for yourself earlier and when they ask you about them be honest. You won’t want to let down your loved ones and it will motivate you to keep up with your program.
